I have a strong desire to own a Miata, but I have no interest in a Mustang convertible, especially of the SN95 variety because it’s a “girls car”.To quote Partic Star “the inner machinations of my mind are an enigma.”
Also I just found another car to the “test drive when I can get down to Minneapolis” list.

I don’t want any convertibles really. I like the Mx5 though but am 6’3” and there just isn’t enough room for me.

What about a NC? I’m only 6’l” but I’m still thinking that if I get a Miata it’ll be an NC. Partially because they are bigger, but also because I just want a newer car.

I’ve been wondering if a convertible would be fun... But around here the top would be up for the entire summer and the entire winter and half of the fall and spring... so maybe not worth it.

As a Miata owner, it’s still fun. Visibility is garbage with the top up, but that doesn’t matter at full chat. Plus, you can go top down any time it’s over 40 degrees with the heater cranking. The bigger question is whether you can stand the noise.

I’m 6'2" and I struggled in the Fiata, had my legs against the dash really!

That part of the appeal of the Miata you can raise and lower the top in 5 seconds with one hand! Get to cold, raise the top, tired of the wind noise, raise the top. Is it 35 degrees and you only have a 2 mile trip DROP THAT TOP!

To qualify for Corvette convertible ownership you need to have male pattern baldness. Here are my desired convertibles:
I’m an odd one.

You have the Miata-owner mindset

Perceptions are everything. My wife was really upset when I called her Explorer nothing more than a really tall station wagon. She HATES station wagons. In one sentence, I ruined the whole SUV image for her.

Roadster=cool
Sports car with top chopped off=compromise
I understand you completely.

I propose the bad idea that you get an Alfa Romeo Spyder.

I’m only marginally tall at 6'1", and I find most roadster type convertibles to be claustrophobic. I once tried on an SLK55, no go. Amazingly, I fit fine in an F-Type roadster rental car a couple months ago, but the lack of rear quarter visibility drove me nuts. Good excuse to have the top down - but where I live, that won’t be an option 8 months out of the year.
Lots of headroom, good visibility, and I even like the color:

I like convertibles. They kind of remind me of being on a boat, which for me is a good thing. The summer months are quite sunny and hot, though, so I could only take the Miata in small doses. Mustang ‘vert a girls car? Hmm, one of my sisters is on her second Mustang convertible, and a couple of my other sisters had 60s Mustang convertibles back in the 70s.

Same thing goes for when I call the Fit a van.

MR2 Spyder it is then. You’ll have to manspread a bit to get around the steering wheel, but no headroom issues whatsoever.

I’m trying to buy a MORE reliable, Less worry filled vehicle
![]() 01/15/2018 at 14:57 |

Fiata & ND are more cramped inside than the NC.

oh...
![]() 01/15/2018 at 15:01 |

Perfect!!
Except for, you know, the price tag...

It depends on the top. Below 40, the vinyl on older tops gets more brittle and can crack. Also it tightens up a bit, and when you go to put it back up it might not close all the way.
That being said, when it hits 41 I drop the top on my 94 Miata and hit the road.
(Yes those are skiers in the background)

It can’t be worry filled when the worry has leaked all over the floor.
![]() 01/15/2018 at 15:33 |

That does sound tempting.
I did once look at a Miata with a hardtop and a low pressure supercharger. I didn’t get a chance to drive it, but it still stands out in memory as potentially a very fun car.

I would get whatever I found at better value the Mustang or the Miata, but I like them both. Would you get a v6 or a GT SN95?
![]() 01/15/2018 at 16:05 |

GT mostly because the V6s have open diffs.

I like the new edge mustang gt because v8 manual combo. But I don’t think I could live with that interior. They completely refresh the exterior and then we’re like you know I think the old interiors good enough let’s call it.

Well then how about this Geo Metro convertible?
![]() 01/15/2018 at 18:07 |

Good.

The interior is pretty bad it screams 90s

I’d take it for free

I think you should buy it just for your wife’s reaction.
“Honey, you said the Miata was no good and ugly... so I got us THIS”
AND suddenly you buying a Miata ceases to be a problem.
![]() 01/15/2018 at 19:04 |

Honestly for a while I was showing her worse cars to make the Miata seem better
![]() 01/15/2018 at 19:11 |

Girl’s car? More like old man’s car. New Edge convertibles always seem to be driven by men who can’t afford a Corvette for their midlife crisis.
![]() 01/15/2018 at 19:14 |
|
How did that go? And out of curiosity, what is your wife’s idea of something that looks nice and/or acceptable?
![]() 01/15/2018 at 19:20 |
|
she doesn’t like anything fancy, she just wants me to get something that can carry the three of us comfortably and not be “embarrassing” like my loud 27 year old Mitsubishi.
Mostly I was showing her cars that worked but were twice the price of the 06 Miata I’m interested in
![]() 01/15/2018 at 19:21 |

This is also true.

Convertibles are alright, just need some subframe connectors.

I used to think convertibles were a waste here in New England, with such long cold seasons. “Maybe if I lived in Florida”, I used to say.
Now I own one and realize the ideal convertible weather is the cool spring and fall weather. Topless driving with a knit hat, a sweatshirt, the heat blowing and the crisp air in your lungs is the BEST!
Our summers here are pretty tolerable for top down too. In the south, no one drops the top because they can’t survive without A/C going full blast.
I do highly recommend the use of a hard top for winter, if feasible.
![]() 01/16/2018 at 11:57 |

Hmmm... something interesting, fun, seating for 3, doesn’t look too fancy and is not “embarrassing”.
OBVIOUSLY you need an McLaren F1:

Looks like fiberglass hardtops for Mustangs are in the $2000 range, which isn’t cheap but not out of the range of possibility....
You definitely have me considering a convertible for my next vehicle...

It might work but it’ll be tight, I would still go sit in one before ruling it out

Diller room Friday evening if you’re interested. I’m planning on getting to town around 8.
